Ngahere whānau picnic, swim and fun day

We had a wonderful time at Harcourt Park today with our whānau!  Thank you so much to everyone who came with with us, or popped in to visit!

If we wanted to have a swim, we were allowed a very quick 5 minute dip.  We were much braver than the adults!

If we were still hungry, we had some more out of our lunchboxes and relaxed.  We will all sleep well tonight!

What happens in a reading lesson in Rereroa and Awarua?

When we do pānui (reading), we read with a teacher every day.  When we are not with the teachers, there are lots of different activities for us to do to boost our mileage and reading stamina.  Mileage is a fancy way of saying get lots of reading under your belt and stamina is when we can read for longer and longer periods of time.  Have a look at us doing our learning during pānui:

This group is listening to readingThey are listening to a picture book being read aloud.

This group is doing a teacher task with one of our amazing teacher aides, Lindah.  It is a follow up after we read with our teacher.

We are researching how to tag monarch butterflies after reading about how to do it with our teacher.  Our next step is to order the tags, and then tag the butterflies after they hatch from the chrysalis.

We are working on independent reading and building our mileage.

We are researching what goes in the compost, and what goes in the bin.  They will be working on this for a few days until they are reading to introduce and teach the whole group about how to use compost bins in our classrooms.

I am choosing a book to read from our school library boxes.

When we do a great job of finding clues to help us work out tricky words, we might be the reading detective of the day.

We are sharing a book and doing our read with a buddy activity.

We are reading with a teacher.  Any guesses about why Whaea Helga has that headband on?

We are working on our spelling, and finding words that have a magic Y in it (both a vowel and a consonant).

I am working on independent reading.

We are reading independently, and some of us are working on our spelling.

play.sport first session

We were really excited to start our play.sport programme in Rereroa today.  We learned a new game called Ti Uru, and guess what?  We are going to teach it to the rest of Ngahere AND hopefully Maunga, too!

Once we have had a few more practices, we will be inviting our whānau for another challenge during Whānau Time!

Tōtara Park kindergarten visit

Rereroa had their first visit to Tōtara Park kindergarten today.  It is such a good opportunity for our tuakana (older, more experienced children) to support the teina (younger learners), and there were lots of lovely moments between the two rōpu (groups) of tamariki (children).  As the teina begin to start at Tōtara Park school, they will already have an older friend who can support them and show them our kura (school) ways.

The photos below are evidence of what fantastic leaders our Rereroa tamariki are becoming already!  Everyone had lots of fun, and some particularly enjoyed reliving their kindy days. :)

Science day

We had a fun day of science today.  We used a science kit called Food for Thought - He Kai mā to Hinengaro.   "Each ingredient in a p...
